Communications Room

The communications room is essential for the house. There is water and electric which are the most important resources, but communications will come in 3rd place. The communications room will host all of the means of connecting the LAN? with the WAN? in all fronts involving communications. The following communications sources will apply with the house.

Network

Throughout the house, there will be RJ45 connections. The cabling used will be cat-8 which is the highest rated cabling that is available for sale. Cat-8 will go up to 40GBPS, so they should last a long time, and considering that you don’t have to go that high if you don’t need to even if there are 40GBPS switches and network connections. When needed, there will be POE switches. This is especially important for the wifi access points on every floor.

There will be a NAS? box. I will also acquire an Asustor 12 slot NVME? box for cloud like storage. The NAS will allow me to backup my computer which I will hope for just one or two. There will be a media server which will be in a 5U rack mount just like the NAS. As with the NAS, not all bays needs to be filled, and they can be added as necessary. There will be a telephony server to manage the fax line’s system, and provide a voicemail box for the home phone, and voicemail line. More on this later. Last, there is a network server. This will be a 1U rack mount, and will connect everything together, and make it so everything can talk to each other.

In every floor, there will be an access point. An access point will also be out back, and in the front of the house. This will assure that I can have communications no matter where on my property I might be. The access points will provide network access to fsp, and fsp-g. The second SSID? will give guests a connection with just knowing my home phone number. The fsp is for everything else. Since I will have ethernet lines everywhere, I am hoping to rely as little as possible on wifi?, but it will definitely be available for the devices that needs wifi.

Telephone

Since it is just me, there is only need for 1 telephone line. I will give Grandstream another chance, and buy an WP825. Once connected, I will be able to log in, and connect it to the telephony server. Since the server will use my carrier’s credentials, there is no need to worry about how calls will be handled. If I acquire my Ideal Phone Setup, the 412 and 724 numbers will be connected to the telephony server.

The 412 number will ring my WP825, and I will carry the phone with me while in my home. If I was to order a pizza for example, I will call from the home phone. The delivery person will be able to call the home phone, and I will answer. If there is a call that came in, but I didn’t answer the phone for any reason, it will go to voicemail. The voicemail will be handled by the server rather than the service carrier. This will make sense later. To access the voicemail, I will simply dial *86 (VM). I can listen to all of my voicemails no matter the destination number.

The 724 will be my fax/voicemail line. When someone calls the 724 number, the server will listen for a fax tone. If it hears one, it will collect the fax, convert it to .pdf, and email it to me. If it doesn’t hear a fax tone, it will go directly to the same voicemail box as my 412 number. This will allow me to have one voicemail box for both phone numbers. If I need to send a fax, it will be ITU-telephone-number@fspsample.com. The telephony server will collect any emails to the destination address. If it doesn’t have a telephone number in the TO, it will reject. If there is a number in the TO, then it will take the subject and body as a cover page, and convert the attached .pdf file to a fax to send to the destination. This will allow me to not have to worry about a fax machine. I could of course acquire a fax machine, and send faxes that way.

The 878 number is my cellular phone, and not handled by the house’s communications room unless I am on wifi. Even so, there is no way to send my unanswered calls to voicemail on the telephony server. The 855 will ring both the 412, and 878 numbers at the same time.

Television

I will not have coaxial lines running beyond the communications room. If I understand Verizon correctly, the set top boxes do not need a coaxial if there is wifi, and I have their DVR? connected to the Verizon line. If that is the case, then Verizon will always be a cable TV option. I will have a rooftop antenna where I can receive OTA? television signals which will be collected by a 4 tuner Tablos. If I need to, I can record TV shows on the Tablo, and watch them on the respective TV. I will just need a smartTV box like Apple TV with ethernet. With the Tablo in the communications room, there is no need to run a coaxial from the possible TV wall to the communications room.
